Spring Cleaning

March 28th, 2014

As we are finalising the replacement of all of our legacy XP machines and 2003 servers, it is a good time to take a few minutes and do a little spring cleaning. One of the important aspects of the new HIPAA Omnibus rule is that we maintain proper user rights and security settings. Here is a quick checklist of things that you may want to evaluate and update:

  1. It’s probably time to reset you security alarm code.  Over the year employees and vendors come and go so this is a good time to do a reset.
  2. Delete old/inactive users from your software.  This goes for your Practice Management System, Windows, Remote Access (such as LogMeIn) and any other programs.
  3. Make sure antivirus and malware programs are up to date.
  4. Make sure your content filtering is up to date on your router and remove any extra users in your router.
  5. Physically check your computer for cable management, dust, and that it is well ventilated.
  6. Reset your wireless password.
  7. Remove/uninstall any unused software.
  8. Uninstall old/unused printers.

Recording these procedures and noting their completion should be included in your HIPAA manual to show "best efforts".

If you are not on our complete care plan and need help with any of these services, feel free to give us a call. I hope your 2014 is off to a great start and look forward to helping you make the rest of 2014 productive and computer hassle free!
