UniFi G6 PTZ Camera Review

UniFi G6 PTZ Camera: The Perfect Middle Ground in UniFi’s PTZ Lineup

We’ve been waiting for this one. UniFi just dropped a new pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) camera—the G6 PTZ—and it slots perfectly between the G5 PTZ and the AI PTZ Industrial. In our latest YouTube video, we dive deep into what makes this camera so impressive and why it might be the best choice for both residential and commercial UniFi Protect setups.

What’s New with the G6 PTZ?

The G6 PTZ is UniFi’s sweet-spot solution for users needing advanced zoom and tracking features without jumping to the premium AI PTZ’s price tag. It boasts:

  • Dual-lens system for seamless zoom transitions
  • 4K resolution with 10x hybrid zoom
  • AI-powered detection including faces, vehicles, license plates, and more
  • Smart tracking with optical zoom
  • Edge recording via SD card support
  • Mounting flexibility with support for both flat wall and in-ceiling mounts
  • Clean, modern design available in both black and white

First Impressions & Unboxing

The G6 PTZ comes packaged with UniFi’s signature style—clean and professional. Included in the box are multiple mounting options, making installation a breeze whether you're upgrading from a G5 or starting fresh. On first inspection, it’s slightly larger than the G5 PTZ but far from bulky.

Side-by-Side Comparisons

In the video, we put the G6 PTZ to the test alongside the G4 Industrial, G5 PTZ, and AI PTZ. Here’s the breakdown:

  • G5 PTZ: No optical zoom, only digital. Tracks well but lacks AI feature richness.
  • AI PTZ: Incredible zoom and AI features, but large and costly ($1,299).
  • G6 PTZ: Bridges the gap with physical zoom, impressive AI features, and an affordable price tag ($399).

The G6 PTZ's zoom is smoother than expected, with an almost imperceptible lens switch mid-range. Compared to the G5, the detail retention during zoom is dramatically better. It doesn’t quite match the AI PTZ, but it comes close enough to make you question the $900 difference.

Low-Light Performance & IR Capabilities

One of the stand-out moments from the review was the G6 PTZ’s night performance. With IR enabled, it manages detailed, high-contrast imagery even when ambient light is minimal. While other cameras struggled in grayscale night mode, the G6 PTZ was able to stay in color mode for longer and transition back smoothly when lighting improved.

Smart Features in Action

From auto-tracking people to setting up preset patrol routes, the G6 PTZ delivers powerful surveillance features. One impressive trick? Pairing a stationary camera (like a turret) with a line-crossing trigger to command the PTZ to focus on a door or entry point. These advanced automations make it an intelligent tool for dynamic security environments.

G6 PTZ: Is It Right for You?

If you’re looking for:

  • High-quality video with real zoom capabilities
  • Strong AI-powered tracking and alerts
  • Excellent build quality and installation flexibility
  • A price that makes sense ($399)

…then the G6 PTZ should be your next camera.

We believe it's the best value in the UniFi PTZ lineup today.
